National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 to October 15. This month honors the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans in history, culture, and achievements. 

The Arlington Public Library invites the community to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of programs: 

Health and Wellness Fair 

Saturday, September 21, 2024, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., East Library and Recreation Center 

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through physical and mental wellness! Join us for fun wellness activities and community demonstrations in Spanish. Arlington Public Library is partnering with local and free resources to create a one stop shop of information geared towards our Spanish speaking population. 

We have 25+ local community resources coming. Some topics covered include diabetes, Alzheimer's, perinatal care, dental health and much more! Zumba is from 11-12, and Healthy Living for your Brain & Body presented by the Alzheimer's association is from 12:15-1:15. Attendees can fill out a survey to enter for prizes from our partners, including a budget planner!

¡Celebre el mes de la Herencia Hispana con salud mental y física! Unase a nosotros a disfrutar de actividades de salud y demostraciones de salud de la comunidad en español. La Biblioteca Pública de Arlignton se asocia con recursos locales y gratuitos para crear un solo lugar de información para nuestra comunidad de habla hispana.  

Asistirán más de 25 recursos locales de la comunidad. Algunos de los temas que se cubrirán incluyen la diabetes, el Alzheimer, el cuidado del embarazo, la salud dental y mucho más. La Zumba será de 11am-12pm, y Vida Saludable para tu Cerebro y Cuerpo, que será presentado por la Asociación de Alzheimers, será de 12:15-1:15pm. Los asistentes del programa podrán llenar una encuesta para ganar premios de nuestros socios, incluyendo un plan de presupuesto.

Tea Time: Horchata 

Wednesday, September 25, 2024, 6 – 7 p.m., East Library and Recreation Center 

Take your tastebuds on a trip around the world during Tea Time! Every culture has a connection to tea or coffee. At Tea Time, we will dive into the history of different teas, coffees, and other delicious drinks while enjoying a good cuppa’ ourselves. In our inaugural Tea Time, we will be learning about the Mexican drink Horchata (pronounced or-CHAH-tah)! This sweet rice milk beverage traditionally contains rice, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. Served cold, this drink will brighten your day and is a fantastic way to celebrate Hispanic culture! Drinks will be free, but supplies are limited. 

Authors in Arlington: Miguel Briones

Saturday, September 28, 2024, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., East Library and Recreation Center

The Arlington Public Library is proud to present Authors in Arlington as we host Miguel Briones, an award-winning educator, community organizer, public speaker, and self-published author and illustrator of the bilingual children's book Macho no Machismo. Please join us for this special event to learn more about Miguel's life and becoming an author, his writing, and his books.

Afterwards we will have a moderated Q&A session as well as a book signing for those who would like to have their books signed. This program is free and open to the public, no registration required, however space is limited.

3D Printing for Beginners: Sugar Skulls 

Thursday, October 3, 2024, 6 – 8 p.m., George W. Hawkes Downtown Library 

Learn the basics of the 3D printing software and then watch your design take shape before your eyes! 3D skulls will be available to decorate. 

Hojalata: Tin Foil Art Ages 9+

In this come-and-go class, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a traditional Mexican folk art known as “hojalata” in Spanish dating back to the 16th century.  

DIY Piñatas for Teens 

Wednesday, October 9, 2024, 4 – 5:30 p.m., East Library and Recreation Center 

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by making your own DIY Mini Piñata! These pinatas are for decorative purposes only and are perfect to use as a wall hanging or to chill on your desk. 

Art and Cultural Festival 

Saturday, October 12, 2024, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., George W. Hawkes Downtown Library 

Join us as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with our Arts & Culture Festival. Discover new local artists and learn more about Hispanic culture. This event is free, and all ages are welcome.
