Library on Topic: Halloween The Spookiest Night
The spookiest day of the year, Halloween is a holiday that is celebrated every October 31st. This holiday originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. Otherwise known as All Hallows Eve, Halloween evolved into a day of activities such as trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, gatherings, eating treats, and wearing costumes.
The Celts believed that this day marked the end of summer and the beginning of the winter. They also believed that this was the night that the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred and the dead would return to Earth, which they celebrated and called Samhain.
The Celts would build huge sacred bonfires where people gathered to burn crops and sacrifice animals to the Celtic deities. They would wear costumes made of animal heads, and skins and attempt to tell each other’s fortunes. They would re-light their hearth fires, which had been extinguished earlier in the night, from the sacred bonfire which they believed would help protect them during the coming winter.
As Halloween came to America, many did not celebrate due to the ties to the Protestant belief system in place. Halloween was more common in the southern colonies. They believed this was a way to celebrate the new harvest and public events called “play parties'' were held in their honor. People would share stories of the dead and tell each other fortunes. As it continued to evolve, Halloween became a holiday in which we celebrate by getting candy and dressing up in costumes.
